The Georgia Crime Victims Compensation Program has received multiple reports that the Office for Victims of Crime (OVC) is being used as part of an imposter scam targeting individuals throughout the country.

These scammers falsely represent themselves as members of OVC or the Crime Victims Compensation Program and attempt to obtain personal information from the call recipient, such as a social security number, or will ask for money by suggesting the person’s social security number has been compromised. The scammers call from a local number and provide a “case number,” but it is all a fraud.

We encourage the public to remain vigilant and not to provide detailed personal information during calls in which someone claims to be from the Office of Victims of Crime, OVC Fraud Prevention Unit, or the Crime Victims Compensation Program. The true number for the Georgia Crime Victims Compensation Program is 800-547-0060 and our local numbers are 404-657-2222 or 404-657-1956.

For those who have received one of these calls, you can report this information to the OVC Resource Center at the National Criminal Justice Reference Service by email or by phone at 800–851–3420. Individuals may also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission by calling 877–FTC–HELP (877–382–4357).
